Fema 500 Year Floodplain

The 500 year flood zone is a designated area that has a 1 in 500 (0.2%) chance of being met or exceeded in any given year. Google earth will open and display the fema nfhl welcome button (see area a in figure 1), a map overlay that shows the status of data coverage (see area b), and the national flood hazard layer (fema) folder under temporary places in the placespanel. Flood hazard areas identified on the flood insurance rate map are identified as a special flood hazard area (sfha).

Any place with a 1% chance or higher chance of experiencing a flood each year is considered to have a high risk. Multiple groups with a stake in protecting their communities from flooding carry out floodplain management functions including zoning, building codes, enforcement, education and other tasks. Until the data becomes effective, when it will appear in fema's national flood hazard layer (nfhl), the data should not be used to rate flood insurance policies or enforce the federal mandatory purchase requirement.

I have checked with fema, hcfcd and hgac to see if they have the base flood elevations for the 500 year floodplain cross sections included in a database somewhere.
